Kelmscott Primary Builds A Lighthouse Charter

A lighthouse beam for mariners has always been an inspiration light of safety and hope to navigate tricky and dangerous waters to reach a destination.

This is exactly the metaphor that highlights the outstanding success of Kelmscott’s Charter of Values and desired Behaviours. This was developed by the CEO of Sports Challenge Australia (SCA) Dr Garry Tester and his team at Kelmscott Primary School in 2021, with all staff and community representatives.

Credit card sized Charters distributed to all staff, families & community representatives.

Through a series of workshops held at the school, these local stakeholders developed 6 key values with behaviours, which detailed the objectives and the operation of the school, to allow the best possible educational outcomes for their students. Every Stakeholder has signed the Charter and will be held accountable for their words and actions.

Over the past 3 years SCA has independently audited the behaviours of all stakeholders twice a year using a 5-point scale. This audit evaluated each of the 6 values to ensure compliance and to allow coaching of any values that have not reached a minimum score of 4.

The exponential growth of the behaviours to move to a mean of 4.5 in June 2023 has been astonishing (see graph).

In the past 12 months the key values of the school have had significant improvements including Culture + 10%, Communication +10%, Accountability + 9.5%, and the Overall Mean a massive 7% increase.

Under the stewardship of Principal Jason Bushe-Jones, Deputy Principals Samantha Higgins and Jade Aim, Kelmscott Primary is now the foremost ‘Lighthouse’ school for Charter results of the 31 Charters completed by SCA throughout Australia and Internationally.

From the front office, to the teachers, EA’s and the students there is now a wonderful culture of happy and inclusive stakeholders. This has now impacted positively into the educational outcomes of the students.

Well done to Kelmscott Primary School.
