Emotional Intelligence

We all know that girls think differently to boys and that has been shown at Iona girls enjoy an experiemtial learning activityIona Presentation College in Perth. Researchers have shown that girls use more of their emotional right side of the brain than boys and Sports Challenge manager Camilla Milburn was tasked by Iona to develop some leadership skills, collegiate spirit and emotional intelligence (EI) for all year 8 students (150 in number) who have entered high school for the first time.
“It was a big challenge for us,” says Camilla. “as the school wanted all girls to be involved at the same time, a huge operation of logistics and personnel was required”
But like the true spirit of Sports Challenge, no hurdle would get in the way of the delivery of this important program.
The two aspects of the successful program were: understanding yourself, your goals, intentions, responses and behaviour; and understanding others and their feelings.
Using a mentoring approach and a lot of left and right brain stimulation through hands on learning, we saw all the girls grow in character and skill.
“I was amazed!” Camilla says. “With such a small time frame, huge numbers and an equipment nightmare, the girls responded magnificently and showed everyone they could rightfully take their place as outstanding leaders in any profession they would like to choose, because they have good awareness of (EI), an essential tool in leaders”
