In one of Perth’s elite private schools, Scotch College, leadership skills are an integral part of the boys’ development.
Peter Freitag, the deputy principal, believes that a holistic approach to the development of all students is essential and that learning must be motivating and empowering.
Three years ago Peter, along with Sports Challenge CEO Dr Garry Tester and Manager Camilla Milburn, developed a ‘world first’ leadership and Emotional Intelligence (EI) program for all year 10 and 11 students.
From past experience and research, Sports Challenge had shown EI links strongly to effective leadership, bringing compassion and humanity to a school culture.
The Sports Challenge program illustrates and measures the range of capabilities students possess in the areas of empathy, social relationships and self esteem along with the fact that everybody has value.
Success as a leader requires more than IQ and an academic record, because it ignores behaviour and character elements.
The successful Sports Challenge leadership program has shown the Scotch boys effective awareness, control and management of their own emotions, as well as those of other students.
All programs are highly motivational and use an experiential mentoring approach from the Sports Challenge team.
As one year 10 boy says: “It is the first time in my life where I have had the chance to think about my language and actions and how they effect others … its made me wake up to myself”
