Dragons breathe fire. Just ask the opponents of St.George in the National Rugby League competition.
The Dragons there have long tormented their rivals. Now another St.George is making fires burn – in a positive manner.
Hundreds of children from Ingleburn Primary School and Sarah Redfern High School in Sydney’s poorer suburbs are better off – thanks to the St.George Foundation.
The St.George Foundation is the charity arm of the St.George Bank and sponsored Sports Challenge programs for the two schools recently.
“The whole show wouldn’t have gone ahead without the support of the St.George Foundation,’’ says Sports Challenge manager, Camilla Milburn.
“The families of these children couldn’t afford to contribute financially. Many of the children at the schools are of Maori or Torres Strait Islander descent.
“The schools are in a very low socio-economic area. Teachers said if it wasn’t for the backing of the St.George Foudnation, the children wouldn’t get the chance to participate in positive programs and lift their self-esteem.’’
The coaches were leading triathlete Nick Hornman, up and coming triathlete Stephen Nicholson and runner Jade Warrington.
There was only one downer to the trip and it wasn’t Alexander. Camilla seriously injured both her arms in a fall on 6 June. But like St.George, she was still breathing fire.
