Halls Head Community College Year 8 Camp: Building Skills for the Future

On the 19th and 20th of November, a team of 8 Sports Challenge mentors made their way south of Perth  to the Serpentine School Camp Site only to be greeted by an extreme number of flies but more importantly 100 excited Year 8 students from Halls Head Community College.

The aim of the camp was to provide opportunities for students to develop various skills including communication, conflict resolution and problem solving, using experiential learning activities like the grid and the abacus.  The activities also enabled students to develop their leadership skills and build upon their self-esteem in a group situation.
The two day camp was a lot of fun, all of the students were engaged and actively participated in all of the activities.  The communication was positive and each group managed to successfully complete all of the challenges thrown at them.

It was extremely impressive to watch the way that the students would interact and were working  together to achieve success,  this was reassurance that the camps goals were being met.
Unsuspecting students stepped up and took leadership roles which saw them claim the camper of the day awards.  This demonstrated the importance of providing students with different learning opportunities, something which the Halls Head Community College and its staff pride themselves on.
Many students really blossomed outside of their normal friendship groups and school environment.

The highlight for all of the students was working with Sports Challenge’s amazing mentors.  “They were a lot of fun and kept us interested by sharing their stories, they really encouraged us to join in.”
Not even the flies could ruin the great 2 days that we shared with the Halls Head Community College Year 8’s.  The camp was a lot of fun and extremely rewarding for all involved.I am sure it is a camp that the students will be talking about for years to come.
