Iona Gala Day gives girls something to cheer about

Being able to work together as a team as well as display leadership skills are qualities that Iona Presentation College are looking for in their girls.
So the Sports Challenge team were called in to provide their world class experiential learning activities to assist with further developing these qualities.
Lead by Sports Challenges’ new Programs Coordinator Deanna Smith, the team of 14 mentors – including London Olympics 400m runner Ben Offereins – were greeted by more than 170 Iona Presentation College students, all ready for a fun yet challenging day.

The girls were divided into their houses and were quick to demonstrate their house cheers.  Challenges were laid down and the various goals of the day met.

The Sports Challenge coaches provided opportunities for the girls to step up and work together to complete activities including abacus, swamp crossing and the grid which all focus on team work and communication as well as soccer, which was led by local soccer identity John O’Connell.

The girls discovered the effectiveness of quality communication and the important characteristics of good leaders.  They were then encouraged through hands on activities to put their learning into practice.

The gala day, which was held at Claremont Football Oval, was deemed a total success with all girls engaging in the challenges that they faced and doing so in a positive manner. They left with smiles and a sense of achievement.

Gemma Morris, head of Year 8 at Iona, said the girls excitedly discussed the day on the bus ride back to school, with the next sessions a hot topic.

The Sports Challenge team are also looking forward to joining the Iona girls for follow up sessions in March and April, where their skills will be further developed in a fun and enjoyable environment.
