PMH Diabetes Camp Kids True Superheroes

The 2014 Sports Challenge year has started with a bang!

The annual PMH Diabetes Camp at Point Walter in Perth saw all of the selected kids and staff having a great time, despite the week long sweltering heat.

This year’s camp theme was Superheroes, which is quite fitting given the children with Diabetes really are amazing!

May the force be with you
Superheroes

The camp provides a wonderful opportunity for children with diabetes to come together, learn more about diabetes, make friends who they can share their experiences and talk about diabetes with.  More importantly the camp helped to build their self-confidence through various Sports Challenge activities.
One of the key activities this year was the Amazing Race.  6 teams took the challenge and worked well as a team to pass all of the challenges that they were faced with.  Upon completion of each challenge they received a map which when put together would lead them to the final stop.

Puzzled…. We want to win the Amazing Race

The activity encouraged team work, communication, problem solving, orienteering and conflict resolution which are all of the key skills these children need in life’s uncertain journey.

Yay we solved it

Another stand out activity was the superhero disco.  The amount of effort that the children, PMH Diabetes and Sports Challenge team went to for costumes was fantastic.  Villains all over the world would have been scared.  The Harlem Shake video was a huge success amongst children and parents.

Only Superheroes here

At the conclusion of the camp the children were given Sports Challenge certificates acknowledging their superhero efforts at camp.  They were also given free tickets to the West Coast Waves Basketball game, where a number of children and their families were spotted enjoying the basketball and after the game getting autographs from the players.
The camp is extremely rewarding for all who are involved.  As mentors, the connection you are able to make and the impact that you have on these children is why we love doing what we do.  The children’s enthusiasm and growth, keeps us coming back for more!
