Wesley Grows Emotional Intelligence (EI)

All year 5 boys from Wesley College in Perth have been involved in an Emotional Intelligence (EI) program focusing upon RESPECT throughout 2013.

With the school focused upon academic excellence, the middle school under new Principal Peter Dunning is very keen to develop a holistic approach to developing the boys in the areas of: behaviours, attitudes, empathy, social relationship, self-esteem and life skills.

How often do we meet students and people who are academically brilliant and yet socially and inter-personally inept?  We know from experience that despite possessing a high IQ rating, success in a chosen field does not automatically follow.

The yearlong program focused upon two underlying aspects:

  • Understanding yourself, your goals, intentions/responses and behaviours.
  • Understanding others and their feelings.

The results have been very good from most boys where their new (EI) skills have shown through in the experiential learning activities and their cognitive skill development in their work books.

As Sports Challenge mentor Marcus Colby explained “It is great to see how the boys have responded to the theme of RESPECT.  I have noticed considerable improvement in their team work, communication skills and dealing with conflict in a more measured manner.”

With these new (EI) skills developed in 2013 we are confident these Wesley boys will move towards reaching their full potential in life’s uncertain journey.
