Here was a group of Secondary 1 (aged 12 years) and Secondary 3 (aged 15 years) students, who had finished their final exams for the year, but still volunteered to come back to their Pei Hwa Secondary School. The program involved experiential learning to build life skills, resilience, communication skills and wellness strategies over two fun-filled days.
Under the leadership of C.E.O Dr Garry Tester, Director Jennifer Clay, Executive Mentor Mike Denney and Senior Mentor Lachlan Denney, these students were involved in a ‘world first’ mentoring and learning program. The program covering a raft of important skills for both their academic and personal journey at Pei Hwa including: teamwork, conflict resolution strategies, study tips, mindfulness exercises, time management and asking for help when needed.
Under the stewardship of Mr Bernard Kang, head of Upper Secondary, he now had an opportunity to experience first hand the successful SCA activities, backed up with individual take-home student journals, along with a number of post program objective and narrative audits to measure the impact of the program and to share with his fellow staff.
Importantly each student set a realistic personal and academic goal to be achieved in Term 1 2024, with one-on-one support from the SCA mentors.
Maya Angelou would have been so proud of this program, as the student feedback was outstanding, with engagement having a mean of 4.2 from a max of 5.0 and the narrative comments reinforcing Maya Angelou’s last words when many of these students commented:
“We loved working with the SCA mentors as they cared for us, made me feel special and I had fun while learning.” “I left feeling uplifted with lots of skills for my future.”
Well done Pei Hwa Secondary 1 & 3!
